Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When applied in small doses, it blocks the release and acetylcholine (neurotransmitter responsible for taking electrical messages from the brain to the muscles) and, as a result, the muscle does not receive the message to contract.

Currently the use of botulinum toxin is very broad, besides being used from the eye area and forehead to decrease wrinkles, in dentistry is also used for:
Decrease gingival smile (people who show a lot of the gums when they smile);
Decrease headaches caused by tightening of teeth;
Decrease bite strength in patients who are going to perform dental implant surgeries assisting postoperative;
The treatment of bruxism and others.

After the application of the botulinum toxin, in approximately 5 days the patient already begins to feel its effects, and the maximum action is obtained in 15 days. The duration of the toxin effect varies from person to person, but usually lasts from 3 to 6 months, the patient should make new application only after 4 months of the first application.

On the day of application the patient should avoid physical activities, do not lie down for at least 4 hours and make use of sunscreen.

Patients with degenerative and pregnant neuromuscular disease are against indicated for toxin application.
